Several chessmen, carved in ivory, were found in the loch at Monkstadt during the process of draining (Loch Cholium Cille, drained 1763 and 1824) and are now in the possession of Lord Londesborough. One of these is probably the piece presented to the NMAS in 1782 by a former Lord Macdonald, representing two helmed knights seated back to back (J A Smith 1862).
