Full Description

(NJ 0105 3901) Stone Cist (NR). (Remains of)
OS 6"map, Morayshire, 1st ed., (1873)

The remains of two cists, one of which is said to have contained ashes and charcoal set in a cairn which may have originated as field clearance, though it lies at a lower level than other field clearance in the area (See NJ03NW 2). It lies exactly on the line of the parish boundary fence and has been opened up to make room for the wires.
Name Book 1871; A Graham 1959.

A cairn placed on the W fringe of a field system. It measures about 6.5m in diameter and about 0.2m high and there is nothing to distinguish it from the nearby clearance heaps, except for two cists revealed by excavation for the fence.
One cist occurs slightly to the E of the centre of the cairn. Oriented E-W, only the S side slab about 1.6m long and about 0.6m deep, and the partly obscured fallen E slab, survive. It is well down in the cairn material, possibly on the old ground level, but it cannot be ascertained if it is a primary burial or an intrusion into a clearance heap.
The second cist occurs in the NW arc of the cairn, higher up in the material, and is undoubtedly intrusive. Oriented ESE-WNW, only the N and E slabs survive, both about 0.8m long. It is almost full of earth and stones.
Surveyed at 1/10560.
Visited by OS (A A) 1 March 1971.
