The town of Grant - now Grantown - was made a burgh of regality by charter of 1694 AD, and entitled to a market cross.

No trace and no local knowledge of a market cross at Grantown.

Centred NJ 0374 2984. This is the site of the hamlet of Old Grantown first mentioned in the 16th century, and depopulated by about 1823. The old Market Cross stood here until 13th June, 1766, when it was removed to the new town (Grantown - 0327) but not noted again since that date. Remains of some of the buildings and at least two streets are still to be seen in the fields where the former town stood. The main street with houses on two sides runs along the old road to the castle with a second street with buildings on one side running off it. <1>

Remains of the old road through the town and heading towards the castle can be seen as earthworks and possible cropmarks in the fields. The southern part of the road is still used as an access track.
