Monument record MHG7160 - Hut Circle - Poll Mor

A hut circle at Poll Mor, Achnacarinan.

At NC 0536 0479, situated on a slight rise near a stream, is a hut circle, overall diameter 9.0m. It has an almost complete inner ring of stones set on edge and the northern segment of an outer ring. The space between them is filled with earth and small stones. It has an entrance in the SE and a slight raised platform against the inner wall on the N. There is no trace of associated fields or enclosures in the vicinity, which is an area of low-lying peaty ground.

Hut Circle (NR) OS 1:10,000 map, (1970)

An unusually well-preserved hut circle measuring 6.8m in diameter within a wall varying in thickness from 1.3m to 1.5m. The inner and outer wall faces of contiguous slabs on edge have been subject to little disturbance but the entrance in the SE has been mutilated. The "platform" noted by OS field surveyor (G H P) is due to tumble. Visited by OS (J M) 11 July 1974.

200536 900471 Poll Mor, Achnacarinan DC005: The hut circle was visited by D and C Curtis in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. This circular stone structure is in good condition. It lies on a natural terrace 300m below the single track road, in a gently sloping valley. It is distant 20m from a stream, Allt a Phuill Mhor, and 1000m from the sea. The platform is on dry ground but surrounding ground to E and downstream is boggy. Many of the wall orthostats survive in both outer and inner faces. There is considerable tumble inside and outside the structure. Vegetation inside the HC is mostly grass together with some heather and bracken. The surrounding landscape is mostly heather covered. Average inner diameter is 7.0m, outer diameter is 9.25m. The double skinned wall is 1.5m thick with maximum height 0.5m. The entrance faces southeast, with width 1m both externally and internally, and with passage length 1m. DC005 is distant 1000m from both CEM008 (see MHG7158) and CMM115 (see MHG9138). <1> <2>
