Monument record MHG7761 - Possible Souterrain & Still, Loch Bharranch

This structure is set into base of natural hillock at NG 9702 5742. It comprises an overgrown hollow 1.8m diameter and 0.8m deep which is approached from E along a drystoned walled passage 1.3m long by 1m wide. At inner end of passage is a transverse stone which may be a lintel. Running E from passage for 2.5m and then going at right angles to S for 4m are traces of what appears to be a choked drain. The purpose of structure is uncertain. It is in an odd position for a kiln and entrance-way appears too sophisticated for it to be a shieling. It is undoubtedly relatively modern and could possibly be an illicit still.

An earth dwelling was found in September 1969 in the lee of a promontory on Loch Bharranch (at NG 979 574) by Capt J Dent.
