Full Description

A hut circle at Allt Dhunnchaidh, Kerrsdale Farm, near Shieldaig.

Hut circle, 7m in diameter, of grass-covered stone. <1>

Not visible from the road side verge. The field has been heavily grazed, but it is also noticeably cut by latrge drainage trenches. The field closer to the fort is much rougher grazing, so if the hut circle lies within this, more likely to survive - HAW 7/2004 [NOTE - the road is c235m away from the site of the hut circle which is clearly visible on 1999-2001 and 2009 APs and could not have been visible from the road - IS-L 07/06/2017].

182385 872960 Alt Dhunnchaidh AMC126: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. The circular stone structure sits 10m from a stream on the edge of the stream terrace - see sketch to understand how the HC sits in the site. Lazy beds lie to West in the flat field leading to Kerry River which is 300m to the West. This is Kerrydale Farm ground, so probably has had multi-period cultivation. There are extensive views inland from the site. Very few stones can be seen; they are covered by grass and moss and were identified by prodding. Average internal diameter is 7.85m, external diameter is 11.3m. The double skinned wall is 1.5m thick and has maximum height 0.8m. Entrance orientation is to Northeast. Width of entrance is 1.7m externally and 1.0m internally with passage length 2.6m. There are two extended entrance terminals. A stone clearance cairn lies 3m to the southeast. The roundhouse site is 300m from Dun Creagan Fhamhair (see MHG7738). <2> <3>

[Note: a database was set up as part of research for the dissertation and was subsequently expanded as an extension of the We Digs Project (see website link below). The full access database can be made available to enquirers/researchers if requested - contact HER for details].

Note: NGR adjusted to position as seen on 2009 vertical APs [IS-L 07/06/2017].
