Full Description
NH57NE 19 NH 569 771
In rough ground 400m S of Strath Rusdale Lodge, on opposite side of strath, there is a farmstead comprising a group of 4 buildings, a kiln-barn and three enclosures. The largest of buildings measures 20.5m from NW-SE by 5.2m over walls about 0.9m in thickness and up to 0.9m in height, and it is notable for a recessed bedneuk some 2.7m long and 1.3m deep in SW wall. There is a central drain in SW end. On NE a two-compartment building is attached end on by a short length of drystone wall; there is a ditch at NE end of SW compartment. The well-preserved kiln-barn which backs onto a low ridge still has the lintels of the kiln intact and the structure stands more than 1m high. The splayed flue has an opening 0.95m square and is 0.8m deep, narrowing to a gap 0.3m high and 0.5m wide.
The other buildings and enclosures are scattered over an area extending to about 80m by 80m. They are remarkable only for their rough boulder construction and they still stand up to about 1m in height with no sign of any robbing. Two of the enclosures have small subsidiary internal chambers.
