Full Description
This may be the site of Tain castle. See NH78SE0002.
There is no visible sign of a castle today and some people are sceptical that one ever existed there, as there are no known documentary references to one. Nevertheless there are notes of stone walls having been discovered at various times, and the former main road from the south, still called ‘King Street’, leads straight to it.
The kings must have stayed somewhere on their visits. We know that James IV stayed on some occasions with the Provost (of burgh and college combined): perhaps he had a suitably impressive residence, a fortified town-house of some kind, here.
The site is now occupied by a private house and garden.
