Monument record MHG8710 - Provost's Well

A well defined prehistoric settlement and field system, on gently sloping SE facing moorland, recently ploughed for afforestation. Reported by Mrs J Durham.
Hut Circle 'A' (NH 7311 7868) - 'Scooped' house platform, internal diameter of 12.5m NE-SW by 10.5m with pronounced back and forescarps each 1.8m high, with tumble revettments. No evidence of stone walling. Entrance on the change of slope to NE. What appears to be a later clearance cairn on SE edge of the platform.
Hut circle 'B' (NH 7316 7867) 'Scooped' house platform much obscured by peat. A fairly well defined wall (1.8m wide) with occasional outer facing stones is visible below entrance on NE, and on the change of slope to the SW, enclosing a platform 9.5m in diameter. Some 3m outside the wall on the SW lies a distinct (1m high) quartz boulder. The contemporary field system of about 2 ha consists mainly of three large inter-connected curvilinear dykes forming three large fields, two of which are sub-divided by two straight lengths of stony banks. Clearance cairns occur within the dykes, and outside to the NW.
A small rectangular grouse butt lies close to the forest road.
