Monument record MHG874 - Shieling huts - Achadh Mor

On Achadh Mor is a low, mutilated grassy mound 0.7m high, on top of which are the vague outlines of a rectangular foundation measuring about 5 by 3m. Some 110m NW, in a grassy patch, are several large stones set on edge, possibly remains of a rectangular structure some 3 by 3m. These are undoubtedly old shielings.

An unroofed building and enclosure are depicted on 1st edition of OS 6-inch map (Caithness 1876, sheet xxvii). 2 unroofed shieling huts are shown on current edition of OS 1:10,560 map (1962).
Information from RCAHMS (SAH) 18 December 1995

The site was visited and photographed by D Glass in April 2013. The site was described as:
"At ND09381 42998 there are the grassed-over footings of a rectangular building measuring approximately 5 metres by 3 metres. Two large upright stones stand on the footings.
Close by at ND09471 42932 there is a prominent mound covered with rank grass. There are indistinct linear features on the crest of the mound. This is a typical location for a shieling hut but the evidence on the ground is less than positive." <1>
