St. Donnan is thought to have founded a church on Eilean Donnan.
A B Scott 1906 and 1918.
No local knowledge, and no trace of a church on Eilean Donnan.
Visited by OS (N K B) 29 September 1966.
This appears to be based on placename evidence. Eilean Donan translates as "Island of Donnan" and the island has therefore been associated with the early medieval saint, Donnan (or Donan) of Eigg (Miket and Roberts 1990, 74, 80). An alternative interpretation is that the name is derived from dun or fort, negating all association with Saint Donan (Wallace 1890, 115). <3>
