Full Description
NC91NE 68 9851 1813.
On natural terrace on N-facing hill-slope,is an enigmatic complex of stone-built structures, measuring overall 30m NE-SW x 24m transversely.
The two curving walls on SW side (A and B on plan) are c 2.2m wide and comprise a rubble core with an outer face of intermittent stones and a more impressive inner face of boulders on edge up to 1m high in wall A. Wall B seems of a subsidiary nature. The mode of construction is unquestionably early, and is commonly found in hut circles and "wags". The footings of a small but later structure partly overlie where walls A and B meet on N side. To NE of wall B is a sunk compartment (C), 1.2m deep, which is fringed by a band of rubble stones. It descends into a sunk "chamber", in base of which are two upright slabs. Against outside of A on SE side is a sub-rectangular stony mound (D) with its centre quarried and revetted externally with boulders. This revetting is similar to that of wall A which suggest contemporanity, but purpose of structure is uncertain.
There are features of this complex comparable to hut circle and attached chamber at NC 9126 2200 (See NC92SW 4).
One or two stony mounds nearby would appear to be field clearance heaps.
Surveyed at 1:10,560. Visited by OS (J M) 13 July 1976.
