Symbol Stone found AD 1864 (NAT). OS 6"map, (1964)

A symbol stone was found in 1864 on the 50ft contour line, 100 yards W of Cinn Trolla Broch (NC90NW 5). It is a slab of sandstone of irregular shape, 3ft 2ins long by 1ft 1ins wide by 3.5 ins thick, sculptured with incised lines on one face. At top is S-shaped symbol and below is mirror-case symbol. The former is ornamented with curved lines and latter with concentric circles. It is in Dunrobin Museum.

The engraving (Stuart 1856) is tolerably correct except that the curved line in middle of the S-shaped symbol is not continuous on both sides, being broken where it joins the two cross lines in the centre. J A Smith 1875.
