Full Description
NC91NE 51 9843 1819.
At NC 9843 1819 on a natural terrace are the remains of a complex of stone-built structures, now covered with turf and bracken. The nature of remains is difficult to determine but appear to comprise two circular features, both incomplete, measuring 11m and 7.5m internal diameter within stone walls of indeterminate construction. Clearance has apparently been added to the walls, and no entrances can be identified. Abutting the larger NW circle on its W side are the footings of a rectangular structure, 11m by 4m internally; a similar structure, 5.5m by 2.5m internally adjoins the S side of the same circular feature. The whole complex was almost certainly robbed for stones to build a now ruined township wall which bisects it.
The two circular features may be hut circles, but the remains are too tenuous for positive classification. Alternatively they may be enclosures contemporary with the rectangular buildings which are probably post-medieval though earlier than the township wall.
Surveyed at 1:10,560. Visited by OS (J M) 13 July 1976.
