Full Description
NC91NE 49 980 175.
Centred at NC 980 175, in gently-shelving moorland on the east bank of the Eldrable Burn, is a settlement of three stone-walled hut circles (A-C) within an associated field system.
Huts A and B are of similar build though reduced and obscured by heavy peat deposits. They measure respectively 9.0m by 8.0m and 12.5m within walls spread to 2.5m. The entrances of simple form are in the ENE on the longer axis. In hut B, a scarp or lynchet extends for 6.0m from the north side of the entrance. Hut C is better-preserved; it is 8.8m in diameter within a rubble wall spread to 2.0m broad, its inner face formed by boulders on edge. This facing exteneds into the entrance 1.8m long.
The field system occupying three hectares is poorly-defined. It comprises a moderate density of stone clearance heaps within cleared ground, and occasional lynchets. No measurable cultivation plots are discernible.
Surveyed at 1:10,560.
Visited by OS (J M) 15 July 1976.
