Full Description

NC91NW 29 907 185.

Centred at NC 907 185 on a relatively flat area of moorland is a settlement of five hut circles ('A'-'E'), all heavily overlaid by peat. 'A' is 6.0m in diameter within a wall spread to 1.5m, with a few inner facing stones protruding through the peat. The entrance in the SE is 1.1m wide and defined by five slabs. Slightly off centre within the hut is a setting of four small slabs on edge forming a square hollow 0.3m by 0.3m. They may be the remains of a hearth or post hole socket; or because they are not earthfast just a fortuitous arrangement of stones. Within this hut, as well as huts 'B' and 'E', are scattered stones forming no indentifiable pattern.
'B' is defined by a slight peat covered wall spread to 1.5m with occasional stones protruding. It has an internal diameter of 5.5m. No entrance is visible.
'C' is the best defined of the group with an almost complete inner face of contiguous slabs giving an internal diameter of 6.5m. The wall is 1.1m wide broadening to 2.0m at the entrance in the SE.
'D' has an extremely heavy peat overlay. It measures about 5.0m in diameter within a wall spread to 2.3m. Two portal stones one of which is displaced, protrude for 0.2m at the entrance in the E.
'E' is 7.0m in diameter within a slight wall. The entrance in the SE is flanked by two portal stones 0.3m high and giving an entrance width of 0.9m.
There is no evidence of contemporary cultivation in the immediate vicinity but 300m to the SW, on the hill slope is a field system of 4 hectares comprising cultivation plots, 30.0m by 20.0m average size, bounded by stone clearance heaps and occasional lynchets.
Surveyed at 1:10,560.
Visited by OS (J B) 5 April 1976.
