Full Description
NC91NW 17 934 186.
Hut Circles and Enclosures (NR) (five huts shown ('A' - 'E')). OS 6"map, (1964)
Five huts circles and enclosures located during field investigation.
Visited by OS (J L D) 2 June 1961.
A settlement of four hut circles all with entrances in the E arc is situated at the foot of the NW slope of Kilearnan Hill.
'A', a mutilated hut, is scooped on the S side, and measures 9.0m in diameter internally within a wall of indeterminate thickness.
'B' whose condition is similar to 'A' is 12.0m in diameter internally. 'C' and 'D' have been built onto the slope, and measure internally 8.0m in diameter and 8.5m E-W by 6.5m respectively. 'C' has a wall spread of about 2.0m and a few metres to the N of its entrance lies a probable clearance heap. Old, probably contemporary field walls, spring from the SE and N sides of hut 'D'.
The 'hut circle' shown at NC 9328 1863 is in such an amorphous condition, that together with an apparent 'entrance' placed most unusually in the NW, it is impossible to identify it with certainty as a hut. A small area of scattered clearance heaps and the remains of old field walls lie on the rough ground to the S of the wall which separates hut 'D' from the others.
Revised at 1/10,000.
Visited by OS (J B) 9 April 1976.
