Description

A programme of archaeological evaluation took place following a prior desk-based assessment and walkover survey in 2004. The evaluation consisted of field-walking, a metal detecting survey, geophysical survey and trial trenching. The metal-detecting survey took place over all three development phases. A total of 148 objects were found, though some modern metal work was not retained. The position of each find was recorded individually and plotted using a Garmin II handheld GPS. Initial results indicate that most of the finds were Victorian in date including a lot of iron (which had been discriminated against in earlier metal detecting of the area). Finds included coins, pieces of lead, musket balls, a lead seal and a thimble. Only limited finds were made in Phase 2, and mostly Victorian, which apparently has always been the case. Further analysis of the finds is recommended. <1>
