Description
Four areas were excavated by AOC Archaeology Group in August 2008 as a part of an archaeological investigation and conservation project of Clachtoll Broch, Assynt, Sutherland. The four target areas focused on and around the entrance passage to the broch including the right hand side guard cell and the inner wall. A reconstruction of this part of the structure helped enlighten issues of construction, collapse and future conservation. The conservation work undertaken should protect the fabric of the monument's entrance for many decades although further work is required to further secure the monument. It was not the aim of this intervention to recover cultural artefacts, nonetheless two sherds of Hebridean broch period pottery as well as some wood was recovered suggesting the survival of iron age deposits and potentially hinting that the mezzanine flooring may have consisted of wattle screens, if not for structural members. <1>
