Description
Geophysical surveys, involving gradiometry (magnetometry), were undertaken by the University of Glasgow and members of ARCH in May 2012 as part of a community excavation training programme on the mound and possible trackway at Foulis Estate, Kiltearn. The results of the geophysical survey over the mound supported the idea that it was purposefully shaped. Although no structural evidence was identified on the summit, a potential concentration of burning was recorded. The results of a more extensive geophysical survey of a field adjacent to the mound traced the line of the old coach road. This survey also revealed the traces of a prehistoric landscape, with evidence of a post-defined structure, two possible ring-ditch houses and an area of strong magnetic variability. <1>
The results of the surveys were used in the subsequent excavation report. <2>
