Monument record MHG18804 - Farmstead, Garvault, Loch Merkland

This farmstead comprising one partially roofed, one unroofed building, two enclosures and an area of cultivation, is depicted on the 1st edition of the OS 6-inch map (Sutherland 1878, sheet li). One roofed building, one unroofed building and two enclosures are shown on the current edition of the OS 1:10,560 map (1963).

Visited 13/04/2007. Extensive and well preserved medieval to post medieval farmstead occupying an area of relatively flat ground on the west shore of Loch Merkland. The farmsteading sits at the foot of Creag an Sgamhlainn, Meall an Fheur Loch and Creag nan Suibheag and is bordered on its south side by Garbh Allt. All buildings are now unroofed. The first edition 6" OS map shows the main access to the farmstead as via a track to the south-east, heading along the west side of Loch Merkland, linking this settlement to a farmstead MHG18672 (now occupied by Merkland Lodge) at the south end of the loch. It is not known in what condition, if at all, this path survives (access during this visit was gained from the north-west). Historic Landuse Assessment (HLA) zones this area as medieval/post-medieval settlement and agriculture.
