ND 338 584 A watching brief was carried out on the foundations of a new office building and associated ancillary works. The proximity of two important sites of later prehistoric/ Early Historic settlement, at Wester Broch and Birkle Hills, necessitated the monitoring of groundworks. ND 338 584. An archaeolgical watching brief was carried out at Bridge of Wester, approximately 7km NW of Wick, Caithness on Keith Links, by SUAT (the Scottish Urban Archaeolgical Trust) on the 20th and 21st of April 1998. The work was caused by the construction of a new office building by R B Farquar Ltd. for their clients Rockwater (planning application CA/1997/407). The watching brief was commissioned by the Highland Council Archaeolgy Service who also prepared the specifications for the work. It was commissioned due to the site's close proximity to two significant multi-period archaeolgical sites (ND35NW4 and ND35NW5) and therefore the possibility of further finds. Building work had already begun when the archaeologist arrived which meant that a proper inspection of the foundation trench was immpossible. A watching brief was carried out on the machine dug trenches for ancillary works. No archaeological features were identified during this watching brief. Due to the encroachment of drifting sand on other nearby sites archaeological features on this site may have been sealed by deep sand. Therefore the report recommends continuing monitoring of substantial groundworks close to known sites to prevent unnecessary damage to archaeological features.
