Full Description

Two small buildings one being a probable illicit still bothy were recorded by NOSAS in 2007 as part of the Scotland's Rural Past Project. Centred on NH 22072 53196, they are situated in the upper reaches of the Allt a'Choire Dhuibh at an altitude of 430m. A single unroofed building appears on the 1st edition OS map of 1875.

The remains of a rectangular building (Nosas Site Survey No.688) at NH 22072 53196. Built into a SE facing slope it measures 6m x 2.5m internally on a NW-SE axis. Both the NE long side and SE end are scarped to a depth of 0.8m into the slope whilst the reduced remains of stone walls stand to a maximum height of 0.2m around the NW side and SW end with an entrance 0.6m wide, in the SE wall. The interior is heavily reed grown. The building is situated close by a small burn.

The remains of a substantial rectangular building (Nosas Site Survey No.689) at NH 22077 53181is thought to be a still bothy. The building measures 6.5m x 2.5m internally on a N-S axis. It is scarped into the slope on the E side to a maximum height of 1m with and revetted with stone. The N wall is of rough dry stone construction standing 1m high and 0.7m thick. The W wall is curving, built of well constructed dry stone with an inner and outer face standing 0.7m high x 0.7m thick with an entrance 0.6m wide at the N end and two small cruck slots visible in the S. The S end wall is partly scarped and part free-standing drystone work. The course of the Allt a'Choire Dhuibh runs within 1.5m of the N end of the building. <1>
