A hut circle at Cammassie Burn near Shieldaig.

179707 872587 Camnassie Burn 1 AMC123 Camnassie Burn 1 AMC123: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. The circular stone structure is situated on a shelf forming a terrace with a crag above to W and below to E. The ground slopes steeply to E. (see sketch) and there is level ground to N and S. Views from the site are extensive over land and sea. The stones are engulfed by moss and bracken. There are some very large upright stones on inner edge in W section. The structure is much tumbled. Average inner diameter is 7.5m, outer diameter is 10.35m. The double skinned wall is 1.5m thick, with maximum height 0.7m. The S facing entrance has width 1.3m externally, 0.9m internally. Entrance length is 2.8m. Giving an extended terminal on E side.The site area is surrounded by scrubby birch trees. Tumbled shieling remains occupy the interior. The hut circle may be associated with AMC124 (see MHG8291) (distant 300m) and AMC125 (see MHG8290) (distant 500m). <2> <3>
