Full Description

A hut circle at Camas Na h Airigh, near Gairloch.

Hut circle, c. 9m diameter, stone, with some large stones visible through turf. <1>

179221 873452 Camas na h-Airigh 1 AMC117: The hut circle was visited by A MacInnes in 2010 as part of research for a dissertation on hut circles in Wester Ross for A Welti. This was part of a degree course overseen by Aberdeen University. The circular structure is submerged by bracken and turf and is in poor condition. Many stones are missing from circle. Average inner diameter is 7.75m, outer diameter is 10.5m. The double skinned wall is 1.9m thick and maximum height is 0.8m. The probable entrance faces SE. The entrance width externally is 1.5m, internally 1.2m and the entrance passage is 1.9m in length. This structure may have connections with AMC137 (see MHG8276) (distant 700m) and AMC133 (see MHG8287) (distant 400m). An Dun, N of Charleston, may have been visible from the site. <3> <4>

[Note: a database was set up as part of research for the dissertation and was subsequently expanded as an extension of the We Digs Project (see website link below). The full access database can be made available to enquirers/researchers if requested - contact HER for details].

The site was included in a DBA by C Dagg in 2010 for proposed new planting areas around Shieldaig Farm. <5>

Note: NGR adjusted to position as seen on 2009 vertical APs [IS-L 31/05/2017].
